Staircase Painting Services in Harrogate

Balusters and Spindles

Turned balusters in a Duchy Victorian detached staircase have detailed profiles with multiple concave and convex sections. Old paint and grime accumulate in these contours and create a thick, rounded finish that obscures the original detail.

We hand-sand each baluster and spindle to remove built-up coats and restore the profile clarity. For stairs alongside the hallway, see our hallway painting page for the wall and ceiling work that forms the complete programme.

Handrail and Newel Post

The handrail is the most-touched element of the staircase and the first place a poor finish shows. Newel posts, particularly at the top and bottom of the staircase, are focal points in a period property.

We prepare handrails and newel posts thoroughly, flatting back any rough or uneven areas before priming and finishing. A clean, hard-wearing topcoat on these elements makes the most visible difference in the overall staircase result.

Stair Risers and Treads

Painted stair risers and treads in Duchy and Knaresborough period properties need a high-traffic, hard-wearing finish. Standard satin or gloss used on woodwork elsewhere in the house is not always the right choice for surfaces under foot pressure.

We advise on the correct topcoat for painted treads at the site visit. Floors-grade enamel or hard-wearing floor paint can be used on painted tread surfaces for better durability.

Victorian and Edwardian Staircases

Original Victorian and Edwardian staircases across The Duchy, West End, and Knaresborough properties are often painted in a combination of white balusters and a darker handrail and newel. This is the traditional colour arrangement for this period’s joinery.

We advise on period-appropriate colour schemes at the site visit. Heritage paint ranges in the correct colours for Victorian and Edwardian woodwork are available.

How We Paint Staircases

1. Site Assessment

We inspect the staircase, noting baluster profile, existing paint condition, and any structural movement in the strings or newel posts. We advise on preparation depth and method.

2. Protection

The full staircase is the main access route in the property during the job. We plan the work in sections to keep the staircase accessible throughout and protect floor covering fully.

3. Preparation

Balusters are hand-sanded individually. Handrails and newel posts are flatted back to a sound surface. Stair risers are sanded or flatted as appropriate. All surfaces are cleaned before priming.

4. Priming

A wood primer is applied to any bare areas. Built-up surfaces where the existing coat is sound get a scuff and prime. No surface moves to topcoat without a correctly prepared primer coat.

5. Topcoat Application

Handrail and newel post are painted first. Balusters are painted next. Risers are painted last. Each coat gets full drying time before the next is applied.

Staircase Painting Costs in Harrogate

Prices below are estimates only. Every staircase is different. Call 01423 226111 for a precise quote. A staircase repaint typically costs between £700 and £1,500 depending on baluster count, staircase scale, and condition.

Baluster Count

A Duchy Victorian detached staircase with 40 turned balusters takes significantly longer to hand-sand and paint than a simple open-riser modern staircase with a plain balustrade.

Preparation Depth

Balusters with heavy paint build-up need more preparation than those in good condition. The preparation stage is where the quality of the result is decided.

Scope of Work

Balusters only costs less than a full staircase programme including handrail, newel posts, strings, and risers. Typical ranges: full Victorian staircase repaint £950–£1,500; West End Edwardian semi £700–£1,100; modern staircase £450–£700.
