Masonry Painters in Harrogate

Harrogate Decorators are masonry painters covering sandstone, render, brick, and stone facades across Harrogate, Knaresborough, Starbeck, The Duchy, West End, Ripon, and the surrounding area.
- Breathable masonry paint systems for porous sandstone and render
- Biological growth treatment and specialist masonry cleaning
- Rendered walls repaired and painted with flexible exterior finishes
- Exposed brick gable ends and garden walls treated and coated
- Stone-built properties in Knaresborough and Ripon finished correctly
Starbeck Victorian terraces on Spa Lane have exposed brick gable ends that face prevailing weather. The brick has often absorbed years of dirt and biological growth. A specialist masonry cleaner and primer is required before any topcoat will achieve uniform coverage and long-term adhesion.

Masonry Painting Services in Harrogate
Rendered Walls
Rendered facades across Harrogate’s Victorian and Edwardian streets need careful preparation before any topcoat will hold. Structural cracks, hollow sections, and loose render must be made good before painting.
We check all render before quoting. Cracks are filled with flexible exterior filler. Hollow sections are hacked back and made good before we return to paint. For the full exterior programme, see our exterior painting page.
Breathable Coatings for Sandstone
Harrogate sandstone is significantly more porous than brick or smooth render. A standard masonry paint without breathable properties traps moisture vapour behind the paint film, causing blistering and peeling within the first winter.
We use breathable masonry paint systems on all sandstone elevations. The correct product allows moisture vapour to pass out through the wall while keeping liquid water from penetrating inward.

Exposed Brick and Biological Growth Treatment

Exposed Brick
Unpainted brick elevations and gable ends being painted for the first time need thorough cleaning before any primer or topcoat will bond. Years of dirt, biological growth, and efflorescence prevent even the best masonry primer from adhering correctly.
We clean brick with a specialist masonry cleaner, allow full drying time, and then prime with a masonry primer suited to the surface. Two topcoats of exterior masonry paint follow in the correct conditions.
Biological Growth Treatment
Algae, lichen, and moss growth on north and west-facing walls are common across Harrogate and Knaresborough’s stone and render properties. Painting over biological growth without treatment causes the paint to lift within the first year.
We treat all biological growth with a mould treatment before any cleaning or painting begins. The treated growth is allowed to die and rinsed before surface preparation continues. For more on the full exterior programme, see our house painting page.
How Masonry Painting Works
1. Site Assessment
We inspect all masonry surfaces, check render integrity, identify biological growth, and note any structural cracks. Repair requirements are confirmed before quoting.
2. Biological Growth Treatment
Affected areas are treated with mould treatment solution. Dwell time is allowed before rinsing. This step is completed before any cleaning or preparation work begins.
3. Surface Preparation
Loose and flaking paint is removed. Structural cracks are filled with flexible filler. Hollow render is marked, hacked back, and made good. Biological growth residue is washed off.
4. Priming
A masonry primer suited to the surface is applied. For sandstone, a breathable primer is used. For previously unpainted brick, a full-coat masonry primer is applied across the full area.
5. Topcoat Application
Two finish coats of exterior masonry paint are applied. High-exposure north and west-facing walls get a third coat where conditions warrant it. We monitor Yorkshire’s weather and apply in dry, mild conditions.

Masonry Painting Costs in Harrogate
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01423 226111 for a precise quote.
Surface Area and Access
A large Duchy Victorian detached has considerably more masonry area than a Starbeck Victorian terrace. Access requirements increase with height and affect the overall price.
Surface Condition
Heavily soiled brick with biological growth and cracked render needs significantly more preparation than a recently painted render in good condition. Preparation time drives cost.
Paint System
Breathable masonry paint for porous sandstone costs more per litre than standard exterior emulsion. The service life justifies the difference on this building stock.
Typical Price Ranges
A brick gable end on a Starbeck Victorian terrace typically costs £650 to £1,050. A rendered front elevation on a Bilton semi-detached runs £700 to £1,100. A full sandstone exterior on a Duchy Victorian detached costs £2,500 to £5,000 for masonry only. For window frame painting alongside masonry, call for a combined quote.
