Door Painters in Harrogate

Harrogate Decorators are door painters covering internal timber doors, panelled doors, door frames, and architraves across Harrogate, Knaresborough, The Duchy, West End, Oatlands, Bilton, and the surrounding area.
- Internal flush doors and panelled doors in satinwood or gloss
- Door frames and architraves hand-finished at every junction
- Four-panel and six-panel timber doors prepared and flatted back
- Fire doors and specialist door finishes where required
- Full sets of internal doors completed in a single programme
Knaresborough Victorian semis on Bond End and Gracious Street have original four-panel timber doors where previous coats of gloss have built up. This produces a gummy surface that must be flatted back before a clean new finish can be achieved.

Door Painting Services in Harrogate
Interior Panelled Doors
Original four-panel and six-panel timber doors in Duchy, West End, and Knaresborough period properties are among the most decorative elements in the house. When finished well, they define the character of the room.
We flat back each door to a sound surface before priming and finishing. On built-up surfaces where the paint is gummy or soft, we work back until the surface is smooth and stable. See our interior painting page for how door painting fits into the full room programme.
Interior Flush Doors
Flush doors in Bilton inter-war and post-war semis are simpler in profile than period panelled doors. They still require proper preparation to achieve a clean result.
We sand, prime, and finish flush doors in a single programme. Two coats of satinwood produce a durable, washable finish that holds up to daily use.
Door Frames and Architraves
Door frames and architraves are the link between the door and the room. A carefully painted door next to a poorly cut architrave undermines the quality of the door work.
We cut in architraves precisely at the wall junction on both sides of every frame. In period properties with original moulded architraves, we hand-cut at the profile rather than masking.
Wardrobe and Storage Doors
Built-in wardrobe doors and cupboard fronts in period bedrooms across Oatlands and Harlow Hill can be refreshed in a coordinating colour without removing the units. We paint wardrobe door faces, edges, and visible interiors as part of the same programme.
For full cabinet refinishing including spray-applied finishes, see our wood painting page for more on timber surface preparation.

How Our Door Painting Works
1. Site Assessment
We inspect all doors for existing paint condition and identify any that need significant flatting back. We note any fire doors that require a specific product.
2. Hardware Removal
Door handles, hinges, and plates are removed or carefully masked before preparation begins. We store hardware safely and refit before leaving.
3. Surface Preparation
Each door is flatted back to a sound surface. Built-up coats on panelled doors are sanded at the raised sections and in the recesses. Primer is applied to any bare wood areas.
4. Topcoat Application
Two coats of satinwood or gloss are applied. We work in the correct direction for each door profile — panel sections first, then mouldings, then rails and stiles.
5. Frames and Architraves
Door frames and architraves are painted last within the woodwork phase. We cut in precisely at every wall junction before leaving.
Door Painting Costs in Harrogate
Prices below are estimates only. Every set of doors is different. Call 01423 226111 for a precise quote.
Door painting typically ranges from £70 to £180 per door including frame and architrave, depending on door type, condition, and set size.

Door Type
A six-panel period door with deep mouldings takes longer to prepare and paint than a plain flush door. More profile detail means more careful preparation and more time in the correct finish sequence.
Preparation Depth
Knaresborough Victorian semi doors with built-up gummy paint need more preparation than a recently painted door in good condition. Flatting back to a sound surface adds time, but it is what produces the quality result.
Set Size
Painting a full house of 8 to 12 doors as a single programme is more efficient than individual doors at different times. Sets are priced more favourably than single doors.
- Set of six internal doors (Knaresborough Victorian semi, four-panel timber): £700 to £1,100
- Set of four doors (Bilton post-war detached, flush doors): £500 to £800
- Full house set (Duchy Victorian detached, 8 to 12 doors): £1,100 to £1,800
