Window Frame Painters in Harrogate

Harrogate Decorators are window frame painters covering timber sash frames, casement windows, uPVC windows, and fascias across Harrogate, Knaresborough, The Duchy, West End, Ripon, and the surrounding area.
- Timber sash and casement frames flatted back and re-coated
- Accumulated paint layers removed to restore window operation
- uPVC window frames repainted with specialist adhesion preparation
- Fascias, soffits, and sills included in the window programme
- Flexible, breathable timber paint applied to period frames
Knaresborough period stone cottages throughout Kirkgate and Georgian riverside terraces along the Nidd gorge have original timber sash and casement frames. Multiple paint layers have accumulated, causing windows to stick. Flatting back to sound paint and applying flexible, breathable timber paint restores operation and prevents further moisture trapping.

Timber Sash Frames
Original sash windows on Duchy Road, Kent Road, and throughout The West End have accumulated many coats over their lifetime. Paint around the sash edges builds up and causes the sash to stick.
We flat back to sound paint or bare timber, prime with a flexible exterior primer, and finish with a durable exterior gloss or satin. Sashes are tested to slide freely before we leave. For the full exterior programme, see our exterior painting page.
Casement Windows
Casement windows in Harrogate’s inter-war and post-war properties require the same preparation approach as sash windows. The hinged sash, fixed frame, and sill are each treated as separate surfaces.
Knaresborough period stone cottages on Kirkgate have original casement frames where years of paint and moisture have led to sticking. Careful flatting back and a flexible, breathable paint system restores operation and prevents further moisture penetration.
uPVC Window Repainting
White uPVC windows can be repainted in a different colour with a specialist adhesion primer before any topcoat. The most common request is to change white frames to grey, black, or a heritage colour to match a period property’s character.
Without a correctly applied adhesion primer, paint will not bond to uPVC and will peel within a season. We advise at the site visit on whether the uPVC condition is suitable for painting.
Fascias, Soffits, and Sills
Fascias and soffits at roof line level protect the roof structure from water ingress. When the painted surface begins to fail, moisture gets in and timber deteriorates quickly.
We repaint timber fascias and soffits where they are structurally sound and advise on replacement where they are not. Window sills are included in the window frame programme as a standard element.

Here’s How It Works
1. Site Assessment
We inspect all window frames from outside, check sash operation, and note any frames needing significant preparation. We confirm the full scope before quoting.
2. Surface Preparation
Frames are flatted back to sound paint or bare timber as appropriate. Built-up paint at sash edges is removed to restore the correct clearance. Bare timber is primed immediately after exposure.
3. Priming
A flexible exterior timber primer is applied to all prepared areas. On uPVC, a specialist adhesion primer is applied. No frame moves to topcoat without a correctly applied primer coat.
4. Topcoat Application
Two coats of exterior gloss or satin are applied. We work in the correct sequence for each frame type. Sashes are checked for correct operation after each coat.
5. Sash Operation Check
All sashes are tested to slide freely and all casements are checked to open and close correctly before we leave. Where operation is still impaired, we advise on whether the frame needs attention from a joiner.

Window Frame Painting Costs in Harrogate
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01423 226111 for a precise quote.
Window frame painting typically costs between £700 and £1,150 for a set of six to eight windows depending on frame type, condition, and access.

Frame Type and Condition
Original timber sash frames with multiple paint layers and sticking sashes need more preparation than a recently painted casement window in good condition. Period frames take significantly longer than modern frames.
Access Requirements
Upper floor windows on a Duchy or West End three-storey Victorian detached need access equipment. This is included in the quote. We confirm all access costs at the site visit with no hidden additions.
Set Size
A full house programme of 8 to 12 windows is priced as a set. Individual window pricing is less efficient than a full-house programme. Typical ranges: six original sash windows £700–£1,150; four casements £500–£850; full house mixed programme £1,200–£2,000.
