Older fencing left untreated for several seasons has open grain and a grey, weathered surface. It needs a stabiliser or penetrating primer before any topcoat will adhere uniformly.

Gates and posts take more weathering than fence panels. Their orientation and proximity to the ground expose them more. End grain in particular absorbs moisture rapidly.

Fence stain penetrates the timber surface and handles expansion and contraction better through Yorkshire’s seasons. Fence paint builds up on the surface and can crack as the timber moves.
